Tougher control on foreign residents:

The Japanese Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act surely is strict. Some people’s visas have been refused. Some have been deported. The detention center is notorious for its harsh treatment.

I got to know a certain permanent resident who thinks our government should be lenient to permanent residents since they are allowed to live in Japan “virtually like a citizen.”

Permanent residency is not revoked unless there is a very special reason such as not notifying the new address in 90 days after moving. Not paying taxes or becoming a food stamp recipient are not reasons to revoke permanent residency now although it seems that the legislature is trying to amend the act so as to revoke permanent residency for not paying taxes deliberately.

An election is about to take place to choose a new head of our majority party. Each candidate (there are 5 candidates) is insisting on tougher control on foreign residents actually. We need to pay very close attention to how the act will eventually be amended.
